The Missions Street March was the first Black Lives Matter protest I attended, and it was an unforgettable experience. After searching for ages for a parking spot, we headed over to Mission Dolores Park in front of the High School which was full of people eager to spread a message, educate others and get educated. The protests organizers held about 30 minutes of speeches on the steps of Mission Dolores High School, then the 30,000 people began marching to the local police station. Due to the mass amount of people, there were always multiple chants going on at once, which was occasionally confusing but more so inspiring and energizing. It was so beautiful to see people on the streets walking together as well as people on the sidewalks offering food, water, masks, and various other things to people as they passed by. There were also lots of people leaning out of their windows chanting with us, and holding up signs. This first march inspired me to document as much of the movement as I could to show it in the correct light, not the skewed one that the media portrayed. The protest was completely peaceful, inclusive, and empowering. There was no damaging of property (with the exception of a bit of graffiti), and there was no violence within the protesters nor was there any violence between them and the police.
